Mevlana Exchange Programme

The Mevlana Exchange Programme is a scheme designed to facilitate the exchange of students and academic staff between higher education institutions in Turkey and those abroad. With the regulation published in the Official Gazette dated 23 August 2011 and numbered 28034, the way has been paved for student and academic staff exchanges between higher education institutions abroad and those in our country. Students wishing to participate in the exchange programme may do so for a minimum of one and a maximum of two semesters; academic staff may benefit from the programme to teach at higher education institutions worldwide for a minimum of one week and a maximum of three months. Similarly, students and academic staff from all regions of the world may come to higher education institutions in Turkey under the programme to participate in teaching and learning activities.

Mevlana

The programme is named after Mevlana, whose real name was Muhammad Jalaluddin. Mevlana was born in 1207 in the city of Balkh, in the Khorasan region, which is now within the borders of Afghanistan. The name Mevlana was used by Sultan Veled, Shams-i Tebrizi and his followers; it has become a universal symbol almost synonymous with him. He is also known to Westerners as Rumi. A Sufi who lived in the 13th century but whose works transcend the ages, Mevlana made no distinction between people, as reflected in the lines “Come, whoever you are, come”. With his compassion, selfless and boundless love for humanity, and infinite tolerance, he has captivated not only the Islamic world but all of humanity. He is also recognised worldwide as a thinker for his perspective on life and humanity. To mark the 800th anniversary of Mevlana’s birth, UNESCO declared 2007 the Year of Mevlana and Tolerance.
